Autonomy, Belonging And The Cost Of Freedom
Free?
One bird has space to move, while the others are contained. The sparrow is alone; the caged birds have a flock.
Freedom and belonging don’t always arrive together. One offers movement, the other offers protection, and each comes with a cost the other avoids. Autonomy can feel exhilarating, until the absence of cover becomes exposure. Belonging can feel safe, until boundaries begin to limit movement. Neither state is complete on its own.
Most of us live somewhere between these two positions, trading a measure of freedom for connection, or a degree of protection for independence, depending on the moment we’re in.
The challenge isn’t choosing one permanently. It’s recognising what we need now, and being clear about what we’re giving up in return.
